What Makes Us Age

WHAT MAKES US AGE

There are many theories related to ageing and it’s something that happens to us all. However,we can tap into science to help delay the signs of age by embracing a healthy and holistic way of living.

There are intrinsic and extrinsic factors that relate to our ageing. Intrinsic ageing is a natural, genetically determined process, while extrinsic ageing is influenced by external factors such as location, stress levels and lifestyle choices like smoking.

The good news is that both can be influenced to some degree. Controlling extrinsic factors is the easiest way to make immediate changes to your holistic health and these include:

  • Avoiding alcohol consumption
  • Prioritising sleep
  • Practicing consistent healthy eating habits
  • Getting sufficient exercise
  • Avoiding sun exposure
  • Reducing stress
  • Quitting smoking

Intrinsic factors are
more complex but can be nurtured through cell health. Among several theories about ageing, one relates to the health of our telomeres – specific DNA structures within cells that play a crucial role in cellular ageing. Shortened telomeres are linked to cell deterioration, but research suggests that by lengthening and protecting telomeres, we can potentially reverse the ageing process.

Scientists have identified five strategies to extend telomeres and the intrinsic factors contributing to ageing and these include: engaging in physical and mental exercise, prioritising healthy sleep patterns, making nutritious food choices and fostering a sense of community.

Another scientific belief about ageing is the endocrine theory – where changes in hormones produced by the endocrine system are believed to contribute to the ageing process. Hormones play a crucial role in regulating various bodily functions, and as their levels fluctuate with age, they can lead to age-related changes and a decline in physiological processes.

The theory supports hormonal balance to promote the proper functioning of the endocrine system. This includes adopting a healthy diet, engaging in regular exercise, managing stress levels and ensuring adequate sleep – like the telomere theory.
