The Essential Principles of an Ayurvedic Lifestyle

THE ESSENTIAL PRINCIPLES OF AN AYURVEDIC LIFESTYLE

Ayurveda is an ancient science that focuses on the maintenance and promotion of healththrough our diet and lifestyle. It teaches that the human body is sustained by a combination offactors including body (Sharir), senses (Indriyas), mind (Satwa) and spirit (Atma) and five fundamental entities known as Panchamahabhuta: Akash, Vayu, Teja, Jala and Prithvi. Tridoshas, Dhatus and Malas form the basis of physiological activities, and their balance is crucial for good health.

The principles of Ayurveda are complex and require self or expert teaching to fully understand its true principles, however, there are many ways to incorporate Ayurvedic living into our lives, including:

Mindful Eating: Ayurveda teaches us to eat according to our body type and to eat mindfully. To pay attention to the tastes, textures and smells of our food – chewing slowly and thoroughly. Eating mindfully also helps us to digest our food properly and to be more present and aware in our daily lives.

Daily Routine: It emphasises the importance of a daily routine or dinacharya. This includes waking up early at the same time each day, drinking warm water with lemon, practising yogaor meditation, and eating breakfast. Following a daily routine helps to establish a sense of stability in our lives, which can be very grounding.

Self-Care: Self-care as it is essential for maintaining balance. This includes pampering and grooming like oil massage, dry brushing and taking warm baths. Self-care practices help us to nourish and nurture ourselves, and also help to prevent illness and disease.

Herbal Remedies: Ayurveda uses a wide range of herbs and natural remedies to help heal the body and mind. Some common Ayurvedic herbs include ashwagandha, turmeric and Triphala. These herbs can be taken in supplement form or used in cooking and can help to promote balance and wellness in the body.

Yoga and Meditation: Ayurveda and yoga are closely related, and both emphasise the importance of connecting the mind and body. Practising yoga and meditation can help to calm the mind, reduce stress and promote physical and emotional health. Ayurveda also teaches us to practice yoga and meditation according to our body type, so it is important to work with a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner to determine which practices are best for you.
